More information about Obasan by Joy Kogawa

Book description: Obasan, a 1981 historical fiction novel by Joy Kogawa, is about a Japanese-Canadian family during World War II. The story follows Naomi Nakane, a 36-year-old middle school teacher in 1972 Alberta, as she reflects on her childhood experiences of displacement, internment, and discrimination. The novel is partially based on Kogawa's own experiences growing up in an internment camp. Naomi visits a ravine annually with her uncle, Isamu, starting in 1954.
